A new Daufuskie Island water taxi has started carrying passengers between Salty Fare Marina on Hilton Head Island and the Melrose Landing on Daufuskie. A one-way trip takes 35 minutes. This is a courtesy taxi -- which means there is technically no charge for the service -- but I encourage generous tipping. Generous = $15 one way; Moderate = $10 one way, Chintzy = $5 one way. The point is to make it worth the captain's while so they can continue to offer the service to the public. Gas costs and so does insurance, labor, licensing, etc. And this is a pretty good deal because all your stuff -- luggage, groceries, pets and other items -- ride with you free on a space available basis.
The courtesy water taxi is provided by Triune Corporation, a local hospitality services provider. To schedule your ride, call Deb at Triune, 843.686.6330 between 9am - 6pm. If you need to tip with credit card, tell Deb and she will charge your card. Otherwise you can tip your captain with cash when you get on or off the taxi.
Parking is available at Salty Fare for $2.50 per day; there are discounts available for weekly and monthly parking.
Salty Fare is located on Squire Pope Road near Hudson's Restaurant.
